Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni handed Stoke winger Liam Lawrence his debut in place of the injured Damien Duff against the Italians at Croke Park. Lawrence made an immediate impact as he set up the first goal for Glenn Whelan. Skipper Robbie Keane won a free kick on the right wing, and Lawrence, instead of whipping it into the box, chose to pass to an unmarked Whelan, who blasted one past Italian keeper Gianluigi Buffon.
Mauro Camoranesi equalised for the world champions, but PNE defender Sean St.Ledger scored his first national goal in the 87th minute from substitute Stephen Hunt’s cross to put Ireland back ahead. Unfortunately for the Irish, Alberto Gilardino grabbed Italy’s second in the 90th minute to condemn Ireland to the playoffs.
Montenegro picked up their first win in qualifying as they beat Georgia 2-1 in Podgorica. The win was a sweet one for Montenegro, who had drawn five of their eight games prior to this fixture. Radoslav Batak opened the scoring for Montenegro in the 13th minute, but Vladimir Dvalishvilli managed to score an equaliser, albeit a tad fortuitous, just before the break.
