Second half goals from substitute Tomas Necid and Jaroslav Plasil gave the Czech Republic three crucial points on Saturday against Poland. With the result, the Czechs have now moved above NI in the table, and have fifteen points from nine games. The result also ended Poland’s slim hopes of making it to South Africa next year.
Second placed Slovenia have seventeen points, and play San Marino in their final qualifier. The Czechs need to win in their qualifier, and hope that San Marino either defeat or hold Slovenia to a draw. The Czechs and Slovenia both have identical goal differences at this moment- plus 11.
Northern Ireland have very faint chances of making it to the World Cup next year. They are three points behind Slovenia, and have a goal difference of plus four in comparison to Slovenia’s plus eleven. Given San Marino’s poor goal scoring record, NI almost need a miracle to happen. They need to win their game, hope Slovenia lose, and also hope that they go ahead of them on goal difference.
Nigel Worthington has had to grapple with injuries while preparing his side for a tough trip to Prague. Sunderland defender George McCartney has been ruled out with a foot injury. Sammy Clingan, Chris Brunt and Andrew Little are also injured, while Kyle Lafferty has a chest infection. Lafferty, along with Warren Feeney and Grant McCann, tops the goal scoring charts in qualifying for NI.
