Thierry Henry lead from the front as France crushed Faroe Islands 5-0 on Saturday. The former Arsenal forward did not get his name on the scoresheet, but helped in creating many a French attack. Les Blues lead 2-0 at the interval thanks to a brace from Toulouse striker Andre-Pierre Gagnac.

Defender William Gallas added a third eight minutes after the break, and late goals from Nicolas Anelka and Karim Benzema completed a wonderful evening for Raymond Domenech’s side. Steve Mandanda, standing between the sticks for the suspended Hugo Lloris, barely had a save to make. With Serbia winning against Romania, France’s win means they can only qualify for the World Cup through the playoffs.

Despite beating Lithuania 2-1 on Saturday, Austria’s World Cup hopes ended as France and Serbia won their respective games. Marc Janko volleyed Austria ahead in the 16th minute after collecting Franz Scheimer’s long pass. Sampdoria defender Marius Stankevicius equalised for Lithuania in the second half, but Austria won the game from the spot ten minutes from time. Scheimer was again in action as he was hacked down by Vidas Alunderis, and Roman Waller converted the resulting penalty.
