Portugal beat Hungary 3-0 at home on Saturday with Pedro Mendes having a fine day in midfield. Atletico Madrid winger Simao opened the scoring on 18 minutes. Skipper Ronaldo crossed the ball from the left, and Hungarian keeper Gabor Babos failed to hold on to the ball. Defender Gabor Gyepes tried to reach the ball, but Simao was faster to it, and duly scored from close range.
Ronaldo suffered a recurrence of his ankle problem, and was replaced by Nani. Portugal had to wait for a long time for the second, but it did come as Liedson headed in Bruno Alves’ chipped cross. Simao scored his second and Portugal’s third on 79 minutes as the Euro 2004 finalists ran out 3-0 winners.
If Malta do beat Portugal, it will be their biggest ever achievement in football so far. However the odds are against them given their poor form in qualifying. Malta have not managed to score a single goal in nine games-the only team in the European zone not do so. They have also conceded twenty two goals- the sixth worst defensive record in qualifying.
