Liechtenstein were beaten 2-0 by Azerbaijan at home on Saturday, a result that saw the latter jump above the hosts in the points table. Liechtenstein now lie at the bottom of Group 4, with two points to show for their efforts after nine games. Both the goals for Azerbaijan came in the second half.

Liechtenstein were missing eight first team regulars against Azerbaijan, including Mario Frick, Michele Polverino and Martin Stocklasa. To add to coach Hanspeter Zaugg’s woes, Thomas Beck and Franz Burgmeier were booked in the game against Azerbaijan, meaning that the duo are now ineligible to play against the Welsh.

Wales were beaten 2-1 by Finland in Helsinki on Saturday. Goals from Roni Porokara and Niklas Moisander, on either side of a strike from Welsh skipper Craig Bellamy, gave the Finns a 2-1 win, and ensured that Wales could not snatch third spot in the group from them.

Goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey and Man City forward Bellamy both picked up yellow cards against the Finns, and they will therefore be suspended for the Liechtenstein game. It adds to John Toshack’s problems- the Welsh manager was only able to name four substitutes against Finland. Boaz Myhill is expected to take Hennessey’s place in goal. Toshack has called up four U-21 players for this game- Darcy Blake, Jermaine Easter, Andy King and Shaun McDonald. Ched Evans was also supposed to be called up, but he picked up a groin strain while playing for the U-21’s.
