Scotland endured a very disappointing time in their UEFA qualification Group 9 games. Pitted against the Dutch, Norway, Iceland and Macedonia, they only managed to finish third, level on ten points with Norway but with an inferior goal difference. Both the teams were a massive fourteen points behind group winners Holland, who finished up with a perfect record of eight wins from eight games. Scotland themselves enjoyed three wins in the group, but one draw and four defeats took their toll. Questions were then raised over the leadership of Scottish boss George Burly, but he has since received a reprieve from the Scottish Football Association who have backed him to carry on in the job.
In their last game prior to Saturday’s friendly, the Scots faced Holland at Hampden Park in Glasgow in a match which offered them a chance of trying to secure a play off place. They subsequently lost the game 1-0 though and with it all chance of World Cup football next summer.
Japan, for their part, secured their spot next summer by finishing second in their Asian group to Australia. They played eight games in qualifying and accrued fifteen points in the process, these coming from four wins, three draws and one defeat (which happened to be the last game of the qualifying stage against Australia in Melbourne, losing 2-1).
