With Russia sitting second in the group table with fifteen points from six games, and Germany top with nineteen points from seven games, the group is destined to go to the wire, with the big game between the two on October 10th sure to be the group decider. So far Russia have secured five victories while losing one of their games, and Saturdays match against Liechtenstein will be their sixth win of the tournament. And we say this because there is no way that the European minnows are even going to get close to getting a point, let alone the points. It will be damage limitation all the way and trying to keep the score down will be their main priority.
Gus Hiddink would obviously his side qualify outright from the group and forgo the need of going through the dreaded play-offs, but he is well aware that the game in October against Germany will be the be-all and end-all as far as qualification is concerned. As things stand at the moment, qualification is still in their own hands; win their four remaining games and it will be them and not Germany who qualify for South Africa in 2010.
For their part, Liechtenstein have a solitary point to their name so far in the group, and this came from a surprising 0-0 draw away to Azerbaijan last September. In their last game they only lost narrowly away to Finland 2-1, and were actually level at 1-1 going into the half time break.
