Italian champions Inter face a difficult away trip to Russian champions Rubin Kazan on Tuesday night. This is Rubin Kazan’s first ever furore into the Champions League. They won the Russian championship last season ahead of the likes of Zenit St Petersburg and CSKA Moscow. In their first group game they suffered a 3-1 defeat to another former soviet side Dynamo Kiev. A double from Brazilian ace Magrao and a strike from Atanda Yussuf was enough to clinch victory for Dynamo. Kazan’s only goal came from tricky Argentine Alejandro Dominguez.
The previously mentioned Dominguez is one to watch for a solid Kazan side. He provides creativity and vision in a side that is made up of honest hardworking players. Turkish midfielder Gokdeniz Karadeniz can also provide an attacking threat. Rubin’s captain is Sergei Semak who plays in midfield and was Russia’s skipper at Euro 2008.
Inter are red-hot favourites to overcome the Russians in this clash. The Nerazurri started their Champions League campaign against European champions Barcelona and came away with a 0-0 draw.
However Inter are expected to progress from this group but to do that these are the games they have to win. They are again challenging for the Serie A title this season but are hoping to make it further than in previous seasons.
Inter could be boosted by the return of defender Marco Materazzi who missed the Barca game with a thigh strain. Serbian midfielder Dejan Stankovic could be named in the starting line-up coming on from the bench against the European champions.
