The Reds beat Hungarian side Debrecen 1-0 on match day one. Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt scored the only goal of the game in first half stoppage time. The move was started by Liverpool keeper Jose Reina and went through three passes before reaching Fernando Torres. The Spanish striker fired at goal, only for Debrecen keeper Poleksic to get his fingers to the shot. The ball however squirmed away from Poleksic, and Kuyt was first to the ball as he slid in the rebound.
Liverpool crushed Hull City 6-1 at the weekend. Torres grabbed a hat trick for the Reds. Steven Gerrard, Ryan Babel and Dirk Kuyt were also on the scoresheet as the Tigers were hit for a six at Anfield.
Stevan Jovetic came off the bench to score from the spot as Fiorentina won 1-0 away at Livorno on Saturday. The penalty was earned by striker Alberto Gilardino, who was fouled by Livorno defender Marcus Diniz. With the win, Fiorentina are now equal on points with defending champions Internazionale, who were upset by Sampdoria in their weekend game.
Fiorentina were beaten 1-0 by Lyon in their opening Group E fixture. Miralem Pjanic scored for the winner for OL at Stade Gerland. After the Liverpool game, Fiorentina will travel to Hungary to take on Debrecen on match day 3.
