Livorno started their season well with a draw against Cagliari, but were beaten by Champions League aspirants Napoli in their next game. Goals from Fabio Quaglirella and Marek Hamsik put Napoli 2-0 ahead at half time. Veteran forward Cristiano Lucarelli pulled one back for Livorno after the break, but Quaglirella struck his second seven minutes from time to condemn Livorno to their first defeat of the season.

New summer signing Mirko Pieri was given his marching orders towards the end of the game for a foul on Walter Gargano, and will miss the game against Milan as a result. Livorno’s last home win over Milan came way back in January 2005.
