While currently heading the group with only two games left, the United States are not yet assured of qualification, although it is safe to assume, barring a major accident, that they will take their place at the finals. The way things stand so far, The United States lead the way with sixteen points from eight games, Mexico are second with fifteen points, Honduras are third with thirteen and Costa Rica are fourth with twelve. While three teams automatically qualify, the fourth placed side has to enter a playoff against the fifth placed team from the South American group – a position currently filled by Argentina with two games to go!
In their last group game, the Americans travelled to Trinidad and Tobago for a game against the bottom of the group side, and only just managed to scrape a 1-0 win. The team haven’t been playing particularly well of late and have looked lethargic and non-committal against what has to be said are some fairly weak teams. Carrying on in this vein though, although in all probability they will get to the finals in 2010, they will endure a torrid time once there.
