With the win, Germany are now guaranteed of finishing as winners of Group 3, regardless of what happens on Wednesday.
HSV defender Jerome Boateng, who made his international debut against the Russians, was sent off in the 68th minute, forcing the Germans to survive a barrage of Russian attacks in the last quarter of the game. Boateng will thus miss the game against Finland, which will be played at HSV’s home ground.
Finland beat Wales 2-1 on Saturday in Helsinki to pick up their fifth win in qualifying. The Finns were already eliminated prior to the game, but the win now ensures that they will finish third in the group. Roni Porokara gave the Finns an early lead, but Wales hit back through skipper Craig Bellamy when he converted David Vaughan’s cross.

Finland drew 3-3 with Germany when the two teams met in September 2008.
