The Czechs hammered San Marino 7-0 last month to keep their qualifying hopes alive. Milan Baros scored four times for the Czechs, while Vaclav Sverkos netted a brace. However Sverkos will miss the qualifiers against Poland and Northern Ireland because of strained ligaments.

Coach Ivan Hasek has called up Libor Sionko as a replacement for Sverkos. Michal Svec, Adam Hlousek and Ondrej Kusnir have been given their first ever call ups to the national squad. The Czechs will be hoping that their captain Tomas Rosicky can fire on all cylinders against the Poles.

Poland’s World Cup hopes were dealt a huge blow when they were beaten 3-0 by Slovenia last month. The Polish federation sacked Leo Beenhakker after the game, and Stefan Majewski has temporarily been given charge of the national squad. Majewski has recalled Jerzy Dudek to the national squad and has left Celtic’s Artur Boruc out of it.
