Chelsea lead Group D with a 100% record after identical 1-0 wins over FC Porto and APOEL Nicosia in their opening fixtures. Nicolas Anelka has scored both of Chelsea’s goals in this competition so far. The Blues will welcome back Jose Bosingwa from suspension, but Didier Drogba remains unavailable.
Chelsea were upset 2-1 by Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon. The Blues took the lead through Drogba, but Villa equalised through Richard Dunne in the 32nd minute. James Collins then headed in the winner from Ashley Young’s corner in the 52nd minute as Villa handed Chelsea their second league defeat of the season.
Atletico were poor at the back as they crashed to a 3-0 defeat against Osasuna in their weekend La Liga game. Uruguyuan international Walter Pandiani netted the first on five minutes, nodding in Javier Camunas’ cross at the near post. Pandiani made it 2-0 on 27 minutes, heading in Miguel Flano’s knockdown from Francisco Punal’s free kick. Carlos Aranda scored the third three minutes later as Atletico boss Abel Resino cut a sorry figure on the sidelines.
Atletico have picked up only one point from their first two Champions League games. Their defensive frailties would not have gone unnoticed by Ancelotti, who will look to exploit their problems with aerial balls into the box. Atletico were beaten 2-0 by FC Porto on Match Day 2. Uruguayan international Diego Forlan is expected to return for the Chelsea clash after missing the Osasuna game.
