Spain head Group 5 with a perfect 24 points from eight games played and have, of course, already qualified for next summer’s tournament. As such they have no pressure at all heading into the game with the Armenians, who have no chance of qualifying themselves so the game is sure to be an open and exciting affair.
Spain have been really impressive during qualifying, not only amassing the total possible points from their eight games played, but also conceding only two while scoring an impressive 21 times – almost averaging three a game. In their last game on September 9th the Spaniards hosted Estonia at the Romano Jose Fouto stadium in Merida and easily defeated their visitors by 3-0. The games scorers were Fabregas, Cazorla and Mata. With Spain also playing away from home in the last game of the group the following Wednesday to second placed Bosnia, they will want to make sure they finish qualifying with a perfect record and rightly justify themselves as one of the, if not the, favourites for the 2010 World Cup.
For their part, Armenia have done what they possibly can thus far in the group, but that still wsn’t good enough to keep them from occupying last place in the group table. They have only won once and drawn another from their eight games. Their only win so far actually came in their previous game when they defeated Belgium 2-1 at home.
