Rangers dropped points for the third straight league game in succession as they were held to a goalless draw by Aberdeen. The Gers have now failed to score in their last three league games, and are four points behind bitter rivals Celtic, whom they will face after the Sevilla game.

Algerian defender Majid Bougherra was the hero for Rangers when they met Stuttgart in Germany a fortnight back. Bougherra exchanged passes with new summer signing Jerome Rothen, and then fired past Stuttgart keeper Jens Lehmann at the near post.

The Brazilian duo of Luis Fabiano and Renato were on target for Sevilla in their Group E opener against Romanian minnows Unirea Urziceni. Fabiano gave Sevilla the lead in the first minute of first half stoppage time, while Renato added his goal on 70 minutes.

Renato was also on target in Sevilla’s convincing weekend win over Athletic Bilbao. The midfielder put Los Rojiblancos ahead in the fifth minute, and strikes from Alvaro Negredo and Frederic Kanoute gave Manolo Jimenez’s men a 3-0 lead at half time. Jesus Navas completed the rout by adding a fourth in the second half.
